February 6, 2022Jatavia Shakara Johnson (born September 21, 1993), better known by her stage name JT, is an American R&B singer-songwriter and actress from Richmond, Virginia, who was discovered by American singer-songwriter R. Kelly at the age of 15 while performing in local clubs. In 2012, she released her debut single Right Now, featuring rapper Yo Gotti. JT Height is 5 feet 2 inches.
Personal life
She grew up in Northeast, Washington D.C., from Wards 7 and 8, with her mother and father. She lived in a one-bedroom apartment with her mother, stepfather, and brother. Although their family had an unstable financial situation since JT was very young, she always knew that she had to finish school so that she could get out of poverty. In 2007, she enrolled at Ballou High School (Washington DC) but got kicked out of school after not being able to afford to pay for high school tuition fees.
After leaving Ballou High School in 2008, she was invited by one of her teachers to attend The SEED Alternative High School located in Anacostia Park; where she stayed until 2010. During high school, JT always wanted more opportunities and decided that if given enough education on how to do things herself without anyone’s help, then no man or woman will be able to stop her from reaching any goal or dream.
At 16 years old, Johnson started her first job as a cashier at Pizza Hut making $7 per hour. Then at 18 years old, Johnson accepted a job opportunity as an executive sales associate because of her career field majoring in Business Management & Sales/Marketing Management.
Early years
Jatavia Shakara Johnson was born on May 19, 1971, in South Central Los Angeles. He spent his early years there as a youth baseball player and looked to be heading for a professional career in sports. But soon enough, JT decided that it wasn’t really what he wanted and instead turned his attention to music. He started taking piano lessons at an early age and quickly developed an interest in rap music. By high school, JT had gained considerable knowledge of hip-hop culture and was writing raps in his spare time.
His parents were initially skeptical about their son wanting to pursue a life of rapping but they would change their mind when they heard him perform one day. Impressed by their son’s talent, they agreed to let him pursue his dream of being a rapper. Soon enough, Johnson joined forces with DJ Mark Adams and formed Deep Threat Records; with aspirations of running off hit songs before long. They released several singles and mixtapes over three years but none were particularly successful which forced them both into jobs outside of music so that they could make ends meet financially.
As fate would have it, though, Johnson later landed a record deal with Interscope Records and shortly afterward signed to Death Row Records – two of Los Angeles’ most prominent rap labels. From then on, he officially changed his name from Jatavia Shakara Johnson to simply JT. Both Interscope and Death Row entered into agreements that granted them licensing rights while allowing Deep Threat a percentage share of proceeds from sales. The first-ever album under these new contracts was 2004’s Sign Me which featured collaborations from artists like 2Pac (who passed away not long after recording), Snoop Dogg, Daz Dillinger and Bad Azz amongst others.
Music career
After graduating high school, JT moved to Atlanta, Georgia to pursue a career in music. While living in Atlanta, he was able to connect with several artists that inspired him and helped shape his musical style. Artists such as Ludacris, T-Pain, Shawty Lo, Gucci Mane & Yung Joc were frequent collaborators of JT while living in Atlanta. In 2007 JT released his first mixtape, I Don’t Smoke Crack under Swisha House Ent. The mixtape featured Young Dro on Go & Starlito on Boss Yo Life Up.
The buzz from I Don’t Smoke Crack allowed JT to open up for Plies during one of his shows in Ft Worth, TX at Club Bangas. Since then, JT has opened up for several other acts including Lil Wayne who even took notice & approved of I Don’t Smoke Crack by shouting out Dat Youngin! Both projects showed growth within JT’s craft and caught the attention of many industry A&Rs/CEOs.
On October 1, 2009, after meeting Luda through mutual friends, JT received an unexpected call from Birdman to move back to Miami so he could executive produce his debut album entitled The Invincible EP. During 2010-2011, More collaboration calls continued pouring in due to growing popularity. Artists such as 2 Chainz (from Rich Gang), Gucci Mane (from Brick Squad), Rocko (from A1 Recordings) have all given JT work/collaborations on their respective projects/mixtapes.

However, it is widely believed that she recorded a full version of Never Give Up but that another artist was given credit for her vocals. JT Height is 160 cm.
Because Khaled didn’t want to give an unknown singer airtime at that time. The song Tryin’ to Win Me Over which was featured on Aaliyah’s self-titled debut album (1996) was originally recorded by TLC member Rozonda Chilli Thomas in 1994; when Chilli got pregnant at 15 years old she handed the track to Aaliyah who kept it for herself so that put Chilli in a hard place financially. According to JT, I would say my mom inspired me most of all.
After I had my daughter, my mother told me not to give up even though I didn’t have money or food and only God knew where our next meal was coming from. In 2005, JT released a single entitled Growth with Trina, Mel B and Da Brat.
