Early life

Scorsese was born in New York City to Catherine Scorsese (née Cappa), a homemaker, and Charles Scorsese, an advertising executive. She is of Italian descent on her father’s side and Irish ancestry on her mother’s side. Her maternal grandparents were from Villarosa, Sicily, while her paternal grandfather came from Tocco da Casauria. Acting career

In 1980, she moved to New York City and enrolled in an acting class. She began her career appearing in supporting roles in films like King of New York (1990), Consenting Adults (1992), What’s Love Got to Do with It (1993) and Mistress (1994). Her first starring role was as Lisa Landry on USA Network’s series, P.S. I Luv U. from 1993 to 1996. She later portrayed Dr. Charlotte Lewis on Fox’s science fiction series Fringe from 2008–to 2013; for that role, she received a Saturn Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress on Television in 2009. A year after joining Fringe, Scorsese made her feature film debut opposite James Franco in Spring Breakers (2013).

Since 2014, she has starred as FBI Special Agent Jane Rizzoli on TNT’s crime drama Rizzoli & Isles. Other television credits include The Jury (2002), Law & Order: Trial by Jury (2005), Grey’s Anatomy (2007), and Person of Interest (2015). She is currently one of only three actors to have won both an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award for playing the same character, Franky Doyle in Oz. The other two are Judy Reyes who won both awards for playing Gloria Mendoza in Orange Is The New Black, and Michael McKean who won both awards for playing Chuck McGill/Jimmy McGill on Better Call Saul. All three performances were for Outstanding Guest Actress In A Drama Series. Scorsese’s father died when she was 15 years old.

She was born in New York City. Her father is Robert C. Bobby Scorsese, who is a noted American film director, screenwriter, producer, actor, and film historian. Her mother is Catherine Scorsese (née Cappa), an art historian and academic. Her paternal grandparents were Italian immigrants, her maternal grandfather was of Sicilian descent, and her maternal grandmother’s parents were from Southern Italy. Both her parents are from New York City. She has two older siblings; Steven Randell Steve Scorsese (born 1957) and Lorraine Elizabeth Liza Scorsese (born 1954).

During her childhood, she lived in Little Neck, Queens for five years before moving to Manhasset on Long Island. As a child, Scorsese often visited her father’s set while he directed various films in New York City. She later said that period was very important to developing her interest in acting: I would ride my bike down [to the set] and hang out with him… I’d pick up so much just being around movie sets.
